As with some of your other posts this image really does a great job at conveying the scale of the landscape. You had some great light and conditions to work with as well.
This is a really great layered composition. I marvel at the layers and the layers within layers. Shooting downward emphasizes the height. It’s almost like the sort of feeling former mountaineers like to give to their images. Even the narrow aspect ratio emphasizes the height. The very bottom seems to add little but if you start cropping it off the composition weakens. There is a nice glow to the grass which adds a lot. If you raise the shadows on those trees they start to glow as well. i would do that. There are some blown highlights in the snow but it doesn’t seem to affect the peaks that much. The sky is wonderful.
I tried warming the image bit because it seems a bit cold and unfriendly in the shadow. But it’s really a matter of what sort of feeling you wish to convey. I was trying to evoke memories of Heidi or the Sound of Music.
I just want to say, I am really grateful for such commentary. The comments are thoughtful, dead on, and VERY insightful. An example is Igor’s comment on the shadows being a little bit on the cool side. I’m frankly amazed that Igor picked up on that. That was actually a deliberate “split toning” choice I made…to give the impression of cool air in the mountains juxtaposed to the warm glow of sunlight hitting the mountains across the valley. It was the cool-to-warm, blue-to-yellow transition that I was trying to create in post…but maybe I overdid it. Anyway, I am thankful for the astute comments here…and I also appreciate the moral support when I stumble onto something right. TX again!
Doug, just like you I am grateful for the comments I get here on NPN. I find your image so good, also together with the remarks of Igor. There is especially for me so much to learn by studying your images and these real comments. Thank’s !!
You keep bringing these wonderful images from the Alps. This is very nice. I’m glad Igor pointed out the blue, particularly in the fold of the main valley. The steepness is well portrayed. Well done.
