Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was trying to capture the moment when this white-cheeked Barbet paused as if in contemplation, while checking out last year’s nesting holes in a silver oak tree.

Specific Feedback

I’m trying using foregrounds in mundane bird shots to add visual interest to my images as a self-imposed exercise for a few weeks. I’m also still trying to find a balance of subject and background in my compositions, trying to break my habits of framing the bird closer. I’m always struggling with vertical vs horizontal framing when there are tall trees involved.

Technical Details

Used a bit of foliage in front to create some foreground blur and still see the bird resting on the hole. Waited for the moment and gaps when the light seemed to look like a spot light on the bird.

A beautiful image of the Barbet, Anuradha. I like what you did with the foreground and the light on the bird is delightful. Not knowing what’s around the image, it’s hard to make a decision, but I think framing this with the bird a bit further right in the frame would be an interesting alternative. That would also get rid of the bright spots on those two curved branches toward the right and the bright patch at the edge that tends to pull my eye.

Somehow the site ended up with a general “Image Critique” forum on the pull down list and you used it for this one, though luckily you put a “bird” tag on it which got it where it needed to go. If you select the Avian forum, it will show up in people’s “unread” list so they’re more likely to find it.

Thank you so much! I wasn’t aware of the Avian forum option. Will do that next time for sure. And thanks for that input, I’ll play around a bit more with the cropping to compose it in more ways.

I put a query in to David Kingham and they’re shifting ove from forums to tags. You were an unwitting guinea pig in the process, so don’t worry about it. The change shouldbe complete in a couple of days.

Aha! Thanks for the update. I was going to further work on my ability to pay attention to detail

Beautiful look at the bird, Anuradha. Like you, when I can, I’m trying to add more environemental aspects to a bird image. I could see, though, a more vertical crop removing some of the right side elements.
