Description

I wanted to capture a wide angle image that captured a number of Icebergs and broken pieces at low light to set a calm ~ serene mood. I wanted to place the image in context with a compelling foreground.
Also wanted the fence line to draw the viewer in…to the Icebergs strewn in the bay.

This is a really surprising image Stephan! The icebergs seem so out of place in this bucolic coastal scene. The ice really makes this image interesting! I also like the green fence as leading line to the water and burgs. I only wish maybe the icebergs were larger/closer just to show off the contrast of the green coastal bay and yet so far North, there are icebergs there as well. The tree on the left side is bit distracting to my eye, maybe experiment with a different crop? Otherwise a very interesting image!

Hi Stephen,
The light in this coastal scene is quite lovely and I like the bit of drama that the clouds add as well. I also think that green fence directs the viewer toward the open water and the icebergs beautifully. IMO all the good stuff is happening on the right side with the fence, the light and the bergs so I would suggest cropping some from the left to place more of an emphasis on all the goodness on the right. A crop from the left would also get rid of the tree sticking in from the edge. I hope you do not mind, but here is a rework with what I was thinking. I cropped about 1/4 from the left with a little on the right to get rid of that building. I also lightened the bergs a little so that thy would stand out a little more. This is all just my opinion of course. I hope to see you commenting on other’s photos as well as posting as I have found that to be a good way to learn as well. This is a beautiful scene.

Hi Ed,

Thank you for your commentary…I agree the new cropping works well…and was wondering how you managed to lighten the icebergs as I’d sent you a jpg image. Did you use Lightroom etc…as I’m new to this application and haven’t used it yet. Best regards, SJ

Hi Stephen,
I lightened the icebergs in PS; sorry to say that I have never used Lightroom. I zoomed in to 100 % and used the dodge tool. I think the brush size was 50-60 pixels, the range was the midtones and exposure was 2%. I did that for a few seconds until I liked the result. I hope that helps.

Hi Ed,

Okay…thanks, that’s good to know.

Best
Stephen
