In Celebration of Father's Day

Male Fox (on ground) and Kit

Male Fox and Kit (on ground)

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I didn’t realize the male Red Fox was so attentive of the kits (that’s him in the back on the first shot). I haven’t seen the female for a couple weeks, but when the kits are around, the male is always with them, watching over them and often playing with them. Happy Father’s Day, poppa fox! You appear to be a good dad!

Specific Feedback

I broke the “rule” of photographing wildlife at ground level. I couldn’t have gotten this angle of view except from above. Are you okay I took these shots from above?

Technical Details

fox family

All three shots were captured at pretty much the same specs. Hand held, Canon RF 100-500mm lens. Processed in ACR and PSE 2020 for exposure and cropping, Topaz DeNoise.

I would rather you break the rule and get these shots than not. They still tell a good story…I find the 2nd shot most compelling. The slight blur shows the action and I can see both their faces. Because there is more foreground it actually appears that you are at eye level. That appears to be the entrance to the den in the background which adds to the story.

Thanks @Robena.Sirett. I’m glad the series told you a story. That’s what photography is all about, right? You made a good observation: If more foreground is left in the photo, it often gives the viewer the illusion it was shot at ground level.

Love all these shots, the middle is my favorite! They sure know how to have fun! Quite a few years ago I was able to observe a fox family and both parents really share the responsibility of raising the kids. It’s so sweet to see. I’m not bothered at all by the perspective. I hope mom is ok. Great captures, Terry!

Thanks @Vanessa_Hill. This family has been especially fun to watch.
