Innocence and Reality

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

It was a summer morning when I spotted the boy in a village I was travelling through. He seemed to symbolised an innocence that I thought would be lost once he came in touch with the hard realities of life he would have to face as part of his growing.

Specific Feedback

Overall composition, drama, special effects

Technical Details

It was shot using a manual Nikon FX10 camera, Exposure 11 X1/125 on a 100 ASA Black and white film. It was solarised to transform the otherwise dull background.

Govinda, I can see why you were moved to photograph this scene. The boy’s posture and expression are appealing.

I think it might help if you lightened the shadows somewhat, particularly on the boy’s face. There’s also some clutter at the bottom on both sides that you might consider deleting.

I’m not sure how the solarization changed the image. I can see the effect on some of the tree limbs. It doesn’t bother me but I’m not sure it added anything.

Dear Don
Thanks lot for your perceptive and useful suggestions. Really appreciate.
Regards
Govinda

This is an engaging composition. The boy is neatly tucked within the strong trunks of the tree. I imagine he visits this tree often and dwells off the ground for a length of time. The title is the metaphor to the composition as it’s explained in the image caption. Clearly the boy is the subject in the composition. However I suggest that the processing of the image diverts my gaze from the subject into the brightest parts in the image. I would be able to dwell on the boy and his pose if the boy was the brightest area in the image. Instead my gaze slides off the boy into the bright clouds in the sky and stops!
A successful composition with an interesting metaphor. Emphasizing the subject will elevate this image to a new level.

Thank you for your feedback which is indeed very useful.
