Project Description

I’ve been working on a new area for me photographing in the tidal zones of the California coast. I typically shoot mountains and deserts.

Self Critique

This is very different kind of work for me, and I have really enjoyed the hours spent just searching the tidal pools which are very rich in subjects. I’m happy with where it is now, I’m looking for thoughts from people with fresh eyes on it and first impressions.

Creative Direction

This is a revision of my previous project I posted here after working with another photographer to edit it down and make it more cohesive as I prep to enter in for NLPA. I started taking pictures along the coast as I was inspired by Jennifer Renwick’s work, but I was also looking for a way to not repeat what she had done especially with her sea anemone work.

Specific Feedback

Cohesion, flow. Is there any singular image that doesn’t work in the grouping?

Intent of the project

Magazine Submission

Additional Details: First idea is a project for NLPA, eventually a larger collection of images for publication.

David, you’ve got some fine images here. Depending on the view, I often like high shutter speeds to minimize the blurring of the water motion. That has me likeing #1, #4 and #7 the best, but all are nicely colorful and do say tell us about tidal pools. In #1, there’s a darker section near the bottom center. I think the darkness there lets it get too much attention, so I’d suggest a bit of dodging. #4 is perfect. You caught an amazing collection of colors through the bubbles, getting all those bubbles sharp throughout the frame is an accomplishment.

Mark, thank you for the feedback. I will adjust that dark area. I think the thing I’m most proud of in #4 is not getting myself in any of the bubbles. I’ve tried multiple times sense to repeat the effect and have been unable to do it. All these were shot on tripod.

David: I’m woefully late to this fine party and agree with @Mark_Seaver on liking #1 and #4 the best. All those little lenses in #4 are fun to view and the stained glass effect of #1 probably makes it my favorite. A really nice effort t here and sone fine results. >=))>
