Into The Great Beyond

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This image is from Bombay Hook NWR in DE. My brother Mike, had called me the night before to let me know that he was making the one hour drive early the next morning as conditions looked very promising for some fog. After arriving the following morning the fog managed to stick around for about an hour and a half before burning off and giving way to blue skies. During that time I came away with half a dozen images that I particularly liked. For this particular image I liked the diagonal with the water and the bit of mystery as the island faded away into the BG fog. The Great Blue Heron made for another wonderful element in the scene although I have to be honest and state that I flipped him/her around so as to be looking into the image.

Specific Feedback

Too much negative space with the fog and water? Anything else you notice please feel free to mention it.

Technical Details

Nikon D800, Nikon 35-70 @ 70 mm, f 18 @ 0.4 sec, ISO 200, cable release & tripod.

For me, not at all. I would maybe go even for a bit more negative space. meaning, to cut it even more on the right side and bottom, additionally, the heron gets slightly bigger. The square crop is a very good choice. This is a lovely picture…

Quite nice, Ed. The negative space is just right for me. You’re right, the image has a nice, moody, sense of mystery. The image has a nice flow from the water entering on the left, through the bird and to the “great beyond.”
