Parting Shot

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was the last image taken on our recent trip to Trap Pond. It was invisible to the eye, but upon viewing on the computer, there must have been a little mist in the air which imbued the scene with a pleasant “glow.” I think this was confirmed by Ed having the front of his lens fog up and our return home, where we passed numerous fields with low lying “fog.”

Specific Feedback

Any and all feedback welcome.

Beautiful, secluded image, Michael. It definitely gives the vibe of a “parting shot” as you named it. The light in the trees and the reflection on the water is soft and there may be a little fog left over as the air heats up. The composition to me, is a bit off. I am not a fan of the tree branches on the far left, which I feel distracts the viewer. You can’t crop it down or you lose the orange reflection on the water which I find really nice. Based on where the light is coming from, the right side is a bit dark, which makes sense with the shadows but wonder how a little increase in light with a shadow slider would look.

You definitely have a very nice DOF with the kayaker in the distance and the cypress trees in the foreground.

Mike, this is a very inviting look at the late light. It’s got a great, end of a fine day, big sigh feeling. I like how you’ve used the light on the distant shore and it’s reflection to set off the midground trees. In the large view, I do find the darkness of the leaves and cones, especially along the left edge, distracting.

Lovely calm vibe! I don’t mind the branches on the left as they echo those of the tree close to that edge. It just shows there are more trees off to the left which shows the expanse of the virtual scene. I find the almost-silhouetted cypress to be very interesting against the more-traditional autumn landscape. And the reflections are icing on the cake. The kayaker puts me right in the scene. My only thought (very trivial) is to subtly lighten the reflections of the two large trunks exiting the bottom of the frame. Just the amount of the two on the right would be enough.

Hi Mike,
Well, you already know how much I liked this one when you showed it to me later. I was certainly irritated with myself for missing out on this; not sure what scenes I was concentrating on. This is flat out gorgeous and the peaceful serene vibe shouts out end of the day to me; especially with the solitary kayaker in the scene. The larger version translates better IMO as the thumbnail does look a little dark in comparison. I hope you do not mind me playing with this a little bit. I opened up the midtones just a little on both the right and left sides as well as saturating the reds just a little. I think that makes the glow of that light mist stand out a little more. Just my opinion of course. This was one of the better images from that day trip.

Michael: Got a nice little :scream:-meter spike on this one. Marvelous color palette and that kayak is the icing on the cake. I’m OK with the small intruders on the left and almost find them imperceptible. Wonderful scene, exceptional capture. >=))>

Michael,

I think I like the misty atmosphere and the subtle pastel colors best. Its a soft rendition of autumn. I am on the fence about the kayaker.

This photo is very lovely. The low key colors and mist create an exquisite effect . Excellent work!

Looks good, @Ed_Lowe

Thanks @Ed_Lowe, @Youssef_Ismail, @Bill_Fach, @Tony_Siciliano, @Diane_Miller and @Mark_Seaver for the comments and suggestions.

Oh yes! This is what I would call a Romantic landscape. It’s how Byron or Wordsworth sees the natural word. A spiritual place with qualities that exceed the world of realism. It’s the mist that gives it that quality. Well done. It’s good when both brothers agree on an image.

I love images that exude a mood, and this one does just that. I almost feel like I am with the kayaker, enjoying the calm, color, ad dying of the day. Well done.

Thanks @John_Williams and @Igor_Doncov
