Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

From Ed and I’s latest trip to Blackwater Falls State Park, WV. Everytime we go there, I think “what’s the point?” We shoot the same locations every single time. Familiarity breeds contempt I guess. But then I get home and look at my images and I feel they’re some of my best yet. So the cycle starts anew.

Hi Mike,
Yes we do frequently head to the same locations, but when the conditions are right; mist, fog, etc; new possibilities open up. Besides, I have a couple of different locations to head to the next time we go out. I love the layering in this scene with the diagonals created with the ridgelines along with the mood conveyed with the mist/fog making it’s way up the canyon walls. The processing with the subdued autumn colors is perfect for my personal tastes. No suggestions from me as I like this as posted.

Stunning!! The hillsides may be the same but the colors and especially the atmosphere is unique in each exposure. Someone might feel the brightest part of the fog is pushing exposure, but I think that is purely artist’s choice, as I don’t see any defined edges of blowout, so it’s just drama, and it works for me the way the fog is reaching out around the trees with such detailed tendrils.

Michael: I sometimes feel the same way when I’m shooting flowers, especially in times like now when the only things blooming in our garden are hibiscus and succulents. Then in the Spring there’s a blizzard of day lilies, iris and roses. But rather than familiarity breeding contempt I think it creates understanding and a seeking for ever more compelling opportunities. I know my flora images are higher quality than when I first got serious even though the subjects have stayed pretty much the same. As for this image, I knew it had to be you or Ed simply because you are both masters of capturing the marvelous color palettes you encounter and the special atmospherics that seem to be a hallmark of your work. Most excellent in every way and please keep them coming. >=))>

I love the strong diagonal composition, which with the fog invites me in to the scene to wonder what it would be like way down in that canyon. And the three evergreen trees (red spruce?) in the near foreground are striking. Beautiful image.

Simply gorgeous, Michael. The colors are fantastic. Definitely peek Fall colors but also a nice variety of colors from greens to limes and oranges and reds. The diagonals in the scene have been mentioned but it bares repeating that it’s what makes the composition so strong and engaging. I also love the distinct layering that the diagonals as well as the troughs in the hillside and the fog create. I love your Fall images. Keep them coming.

Beautiful, Michael! I really like the diagonal layers of color and the hills. The mist and lovely light is icing on the cake. No nits or suggestions.

It’s a beautiful image, and I think the varying transparency of the fog is what makes it so. The composition is excellent and the colors are great, but the range of completely opaque fog to the fall colors poking through make it rewarding to look at the details of the photo.

I’d love to argue with you, but I really do think this is one of your best. There are so many diagonals stacking across the image, and the mix of fog and trees is just right; you get the mood, but yet can really appreciate the trees. I especially like the mix of light splashing into the scene. Well done!

Mike, this does look familiar, :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:. It also is quite striking with it’s mix of colors, clouds, and ridges. Another beauty! I’m a big fan of returning over and over because you get to know and show the details.

Thanks @Bill_Fach, @David_Haynes, @John_Williams, @WillR, @Preston_Birdwell, @Diane_Miller, @Ed_Lowe, @Mark_Seaver, and @elizabeth3 for the nice comments. Much appreciated.
