Fade Away

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This image was captured on our last trip to Blackwater Falls SP, WV. I knew the foliage was around peak and when the weather forecast called for some rain showers I called my brother to see if he was interested in making the four hour trip. Needless to say he said yes.

This image turned out to be one of my favorites from the trip. We had pulled into the parking area to walk down to Pendelton Point when we spotted this wonderful scene with the slow moving fog. It would have been nice to have the Nikon 100-400, but the longest I have is the 24-200. I wound up cropping off some of the bottom and left side to arrive with this view.

Specific Feedback

I had a couple of ways to go with the processing, but I decided to go with the softer muted tones for the autumn foliage. What do you think?

Technical Details

Nikon Z 7, Nikon 24-200 @ 200 mm, f 11 @ 1/10 sec, ISO 100, Kase magnetic CPL, cable release & tripod.

Ed, this is a fine, moody view that says late fall. The mix of bare trees, fog and distant fall foliage looks very good. Your framing looks very good with the two stronger bands of darker trunks on the sides.

Ed: I love the soft color palette and the atmospherics especially. The branches give some nice structure. Well seen, composed and captured. >=))>

This is quite lovely, Ed. I don’t know why but when I view the image I see a battle between the larger trunk on the right and the smaller ones on the left, and I like it. My eye keeps going back and forth between them and every so often stops to appreciate the subtle color in the background. Very nicely seen and photographed.

Ed,I like the way the background colors are so softly translucent . There is so little but still so much in your image. ( don’t mind my English . It was a bit to difficult this time ).

Thanks so much everyone @Mark_Seaver, @Bill_Fach, @Bret_Edge and @Ben_van_der_Sande for the kind words as they are always appreciated.
@Ben_van_der_Sande : Your English is just fine; I know exactly what you mean.

Hi Ed,

This is such a calm and quite photograph, and I bet it was calm and quiet when you made this. Trees in fog make for such a contemplative photograph and I think you pulled this one off very well. I love the hint of red in the BG alluding to the fact the FG trees were once that loud, but have learned to just be silent. My only nit is the larger tree on the right, it seems to keep pulling my eye to it, its just seems to heavy compared to the rest of the scene. Otherwise, its a great photo.

Works well! I too enjoy the soft and muted color; it lends a tantalizing mood. I don’t struggle to much wit that larger tree, but if you wanted to minimize it a tad I could see increasing the contrast of the smaller foreground tree on the left so that it popped out a bit stronger.
