Subdued

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I have always enjoyed the lush vibrant colors of autumn; as most outdoor photographers do; but over the years I have come to enjoy the more muted and subdued scenes as well. This image is from our last trip in October to Blackwater Falls SP, WV. My brother and I had walked down to Pendelton Point to check out the trees on the canyon walls along the Blackwater River and this is one of the scenes that caught my eye. The colors were a little past peak and some of the leaves had dropped which allows the viewer a little glimpse into the surrounding trees.

Specific Feedback

Just wondering how the colors look to everyone and if other folks enjoy the more subdued scenes of autumn as well. Anything else you notice please feel free to mention it.

Technical Details

Nikon Z7, Nikon 24-200 @ 200 mm, f 11 @ 0.3 sec, ISO 100, Kase magnetic CPL, cable release & tripod.

Hi Ed, Subdued yes but I really love the subtle beauty of this image. I think that with some of the leaves down it provides really lovely structure that is often missing when the peak leaves are presented as just blobs of color. The structure gives the eye so much more to explore and come back to. Well seen and processed.

Yes, a very agreeable composition. Maybe a little vignette?

Ed,

A beautiful tapestry of colors and textures. The problem, however, with photographs like this is that they need to seen very large to appreciate all that is contained in them. Small online image-size does them injustice.

Aaaaahhh yes! Peacefully gorgeous!! I agree about bigger for thr best appreciation of detail but good enough here for me! As a variation, I wonder about a slightly cooler color Temp – this feels like that kind of scene.

I really like this, Ed. You picked out a great section of the hillside for your composition. A nice mix of subdued autumn colors. The textures and lines of the trees add lots of visual interest for the eye to explore. Top notch, but. There’s always a but. After all, this is a photo critique forum, so I feel it is my duty to nit pick.
My eye keeps being drawn to the spot in the middle where you see clear through to the ground. Hope you don’t mind, I took the liberty to fill

it in a little. While I as at it, there were two dark spots in the URC.

Absolutely! That’s a really nice job of picking out cohesive beauty in the chaos of the forest. The trunks showing as well as they do is a real bonus.

Sometimes I like these chaotic scenes with just a slight blur in the sharpening. It’s not for everyone, but in some images I like the slight softness it adds to the chaos. It’s tricky without the original, but here’s a rough stab at it.
