Juvenile Rufescent Tiger Heron

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I spent a good portion of July in Brazil with clients, including a couple of different locations in the Amazon. We spent a fair bit of time cruising the rivers there, something that inevitably leads to some interesting bird encounters. Herons are a common sight, but this juvenile tiger heron caught our attention with its antics.

At one point, as it was hunting at the river’s edge (in front of a dark streambed, which provides the background here), it snatched a leaf out of the water and juggled it a bit. Probably a bit hopeful that there was food, or perhaps still inexperienced and assuming the leaf was food… hard to say, but good for us, regardless.

Beautiful colors and detail in this image, Max, and the heron really pops against the black background. Considerate of the heron to have the leaf so well positioned.

A great moment beautifully photographed, Max. I love the dark background and the leaf works so well with the tones of the tiger Heron.

Nice job on this heron. It’s pretty interesting seeing all these different heron types. They all seem to be pretty special south of the border. Excellent., color, and detail.
I got some shots of An Agami heron in Costa Rica. And I think we might have seen some tiger herons
On our outing to the Tarcolis river.

Great contrast of glossy leaf and matt heron - and a beautiful composition, Max. Is that an insect on its lower bill?

David, I’m sure you saw tiger herons on the Tarcoles. Likely Bare-throated, but Costa Rica also has Fasciated Tiger Heron… in both species, the juveniles look very similar to this one.

Good catch, Mike. It’s a fly of some sort. I had a lot of bugs photobombing my bird and reptile shots on this trip!

Thanks for posting, Mike. This beautiful photo of this bird and I also love the dark background and colors in the subject.

The sharpness and lighting is outstanding on this fine portrait. Curious if there was a flash involved.

No flash, Jeffrey. I specifically underexposed to achieve a darker background, and bumped the contrast in post, but there was no selective editing done.
