Kamp Valley, Lower Austria

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is an image from a part of Kamp Valley in Lower Austria that is called “Schütt”. It means as much as buried, namely by granite rocks. The river itself is hardly visible in this section. The snow covered rocks made for interesting emphasis on these structure in my opinion.

I like the way this image is structured with the strong demarcation between the FG and BG. Interesting place and nice graphic image. I would probably just go B&W since the greens are hardly noticeable.

It took me a moment to appreciate the scale of the subject; I like that slight disorientation when first viewing. I especially like that upper left 2/3rds.

The brightest snow has little detail; I wonder if adding a little contrast there would be good to play with?

Hi Peter,
I am really enjoying the soft light in this scene and the way it contrasts with the large boulders in the river. I am particularly fond of that exquisite delicate light on the left side so I am wondering about a crop to emphasize that. I hope you do not mind, but here is a rework with what I was thinking. It is a large crop and may not be your vision for this. Just my opinion of course. Nicely done!

What an interesting and beautiful location. I like the dusting of snow across the entire scene making this a moody and cold looking image. The whites might be a little blown on the tops of some of the rocks but easy enough to bring them down a little. I agree with @Michael_Lowe about just going B&W since there really isn’t much color. There is one thing that pulls my eye just a little bit and that is the the relative emptiness along the bottom right portion of the frame. I wish there were more rocks in that section. I love the flat rock dead middle of the frame with that crack going through it and the small grouping of trees in the background of the image. I find the balance to be pretty good with the exception of the lower right portion of the image which I’ve mentioned. All in all, a really nice winter scene.

Thank you Ed for you thoughtful critique and comment.
I was thinking about a similar crop, just a bit wider at the right, and only wanted to see if anyone else had the same idea.
Thanks again,
Peter
