Description
I got lucky stopping the car and jumping out to get this moment of a nearby female American kestrel taking off. I feel fortunate anytime that I’m closer than 50 yards to one of these shy birds.
Specific Feedback
I decided to go with a vertical crop because of that right wing position. Does the crop look about right?
Technical Details
Z9, 180-600 lens, 1/3200th, f 9.0, hand held, 840mm, ISO 720, cropped to 2881 x 3186

Great capture Dave. Timed perfectly. Question… You were using a 180-600mm zoom yet you list the focal length as 840mm, is that based on the crop?
I’m not sure just what to say. I just slavishly copy the photo’s data in Lightroom.
Hi Dave. If you were using a 1.4 TC it would probably be 840 mm. If not, it has to be based on the crop sensor. I think LR will give you a full frame equivalent. You might want to read the fine print next time you look at that.
By the way, a very nice image. And yes, this species tends to be very flighty except when perched on ugly signs at the wildlife refuge I go to habitually.
Oh yeah, that. I put thE 1.4 TC on there so long ago I completely forgot I had it on there.
Nice take off pose Dave of a really tough to get subject. I could see adding a tad of space on the right.
Hi Dave–Very nice pose and a hawk that always presents itself when I do not have camera-in-hand. You may want to try to perk up the saturation of yellows and maybe some vibrance too. Blues look fine. Well done…Jim
