Image Description
This photo was taken in South Luangwa, Zambia, where we have excellent opportunities to photograph the predators in action, including in the dark!

When things don’t go bump in the night because big cats are silent hunters. The darkness of the scene with the patterned coat of the leopard works well for this shot. The eyes are nice and sharp and like the overall feel to the image. Life goes on at night…Jim
Thanks, Sandy! Sorry, I forgot to say we shone a subtle spotlight on the leopard from the car. In South Luangwa the guides use lights that don’t disturb the predators. They can’t be used when the predators are hunting because otherwise of course the prey would be able to see them. Then the lights get switched off and we sit there in the pitch dark, in an open vehicle, listening to the lions and leopards often moving right beside us… it’s absolutely thrilling

Ingrid, I remember the first time I heard a lion roar in the dark of night, very near. I think my heart missed a few beats and my eyes teared up. I’ll never ever forget. Africa is in my soul.
