Low Tide at Elie

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I have had this in mind for a while, and early on New Year’s day the tide and weather came together, with the added benefit of no people around. The image is a part of a project I am slowly working on, exploring the Scottish coastline. I would have preferred a vertical 4x5 image for the series, but could not get it to work on location.

Technical Details

4x5 LF camera on B&W film, shot with an Y12 filter, 210mm lens, f22@1s, a bit of tilt and swing to get the rig into focus. Very little post-processing, just a slight curve adjustment and sky gradient burnt in. Square full-width crop.

The way the sweep of the shore and the finger of rock point to the derrick is eye catching.

There’s an interesting bleakness to the image, and your choice of such a large, low-contrast, amount of sky is interesting. If that was the effect you were going for, I think that works well. If not, I’d probably crop off some of the sky.

thanks, I tend to like lot of sky, but I’ll experiment with the crop some more here.
