Magnolia

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

It’s always one of the first harbingers of Spring hereabouts, and I can never resist a few shots when it arrives.

Specific Feedback

The original was a bit cramped so I added canvas right around the photo. Is this visible?

Technical Details

OM 1 + 100-400mm + TC 1.4 (@434mm) 1/640 f9 ISO 400

Tonal adjustments in LR, tweaks in PS (Shadows/Highlights and Curves) - denoise and canvas added.

Mike: This is a beautiful portrait with marvelous light and a really nice BG. I don’t see any evidence of the additional canvas. Our early magnolias have already bloomed but the flowers were too high in the tree for me to get at them :slightly_frowning_face:. You’ve helped alleviate my disappointment. Very well done. >=))>

Gorgeous! Lovely whites and perfect BG. No evidence of adding canvas. The way I check adding or cloning is to put a curve layer on to and pull the 2 end sliders in as much as needed to give super high contrast . Then I can clone the layer needed underneath the curve layer to clean up any issues. Cloning with even a slight gradient is sure to have flaws. And adding a black BG extension almost never matches as the image itself rarely has true black edges.

Mike the bloom is lovely, showing excellent detail. I see repeated clone bits in the stem near the bottom, but can’t see canvas artifacts anywhere else. Our old house had an early pink magnolia, but it’s blooms would only hold their “nice” shape for 1 - 2 days, so photographing them was a big challenge with rare success. This looks great, very inviting.
