Description
We have friends that have a property full of exotic plants and trees that attract bird that we never see at our house. It’s always fun to go there and try my luck getting some shots. This is a male bullock’s oriole in their Japanese maple. They had just shown up and when I got there the first thing I saw was this guy. Instant good luck!

Attractive bird in a nice setting with those great red leaves. Nice pose. Maybe play with the highlights on the bird’s right side. Crop looks good; I might consider removing the bare branches in the LUC and RLC. The red’s and yellow’s make for an image that pops. Nice one.
Nice catch! I wonder if the highlights can be tamed a little? I saw the first ones here yesterday – Bullocks and Hooded, both males. They seem very shy so I’m hoping for some opportunities.
I’d never expect that color combination to work, Dave, but it came out very nicely. I do think you could bring the highlights down quite a bit, particularly on the bird as the sunny side is bright enough to start losing detail in the plumage. I can’t recall what software you use, but if LR or ACR are part of it, I usually look at global Exposure first, then highlights and shadows without masking to get luminosities in the general vicinity of where I want them (usually it doesn’t take much tweaking after that).
