About This Image
The lens I normally use for landscapes (24-70mm) died on the second night of our desert trip of six weeks. The next lens I could use was the 70-200mm which, in the end, turned out to be a favourite. I had no choice but to find different , more intimate landscapes.
This isn’t the iconic face of Uluru. I think its character lies in the countless folds, textures and nooks and crannies and countless weathered surfaces shaped over 550 millions of years where light reveals the slow work of erosion and the immense age of the landscape.

Are the highlights too bright on the centre rock face?
Basic adjustments in ACR. A lot of highlight reducing and a few Linear gradients. In PS a small branch removed on the bottom, a small distracting light coloured branch on the rock in the middle and a bit of border control.
The composition and lighting is masterful. So many folds within folds. The play of light and shadow lends contour and depth to the image. I need to visit this part of the country before I lay my camera to rest, lol.
Glennie, the lighting is excellent. The brighter bits do a good job of pulling my eyes into the distance. I like the balance between the living things in the lower left and all of the rock behind.
Very nice Glenny. Incredible light. Well composed. I wish to see more of the striated on the left but that would affect the composition and it’s a good foil for warm tones that you picked up on the right side.

I love the composition; you have created excellent depth and I think included just the right amount of foreground as a base and context for the bigger scene. A little side note, that foreground has a 3D look to it; I’d go so far as to say it has a look of a diorama.
The folds and highlights that take the viewer deeper in to the image create the depth.

What a beautiful image! It makes me feel like I am there in person! The way you processed it with the light and shadows really adds depth and layers with the rock formations. Lovely!
Glenys: Extracting intimates with a longer lens is one of my favorite exercises and you’ve carried it off superbly here. I don’t find the highlights too bright but I do think I would like a bit more shadow detail. This is a spectacular scene extremely well seen, composed, captured and presented. >=))>
