Description
At the end of each year I publish a yearbook magazine for fun. It recaps my year in travel and highlights some of my favorite moments and encounters in the field from the previous twelve months. Though it would be very easy to choose some cute bear cubs for the cover again, I opted for this image instead… so I figured I’d share it here.
This is not an uncommon scene in the Galapagos Islands, to which my family traveled back in February. Marine iguanas will pile all over each other trying to stay warm, and small lava lizards will sometimes climb up to grab a good view (or perhaps snatch some flies). That said, this was my third trip to the islands and the first time I really felt I had a good photo op of this shared space. Getting a female lava lizard (more brightly-colored than the males, believe it or not) was a bonus, of course.

What a great image to get this pose from both creatures Max. Excellent choice for the cover of your magazine. I would think that this would not be as common as you say. I was down there once, and while I saw many marine iguanas piled up on one another, I never saw something like this. By its expression, it looks like the iguana is proud to have the lizard along for the ride.
Amazing capture and composition. I love that you caught the texture of the iguana’s skin so nicely. The contrasts in size and color between the iguana and lizard put this one over the top.
I’m heading to Galapagos Islands with my two grandsons (10 & 12)
They should have a lot of fun. Our son is 8 and really enjoys swimming, so we knew he’d get a kick out of it. Marine iguanas are everywhere, but if you’re on the East-West itinerary you’ll have better chances with the large colonies of them on Isabela and Fernandina Islands.

Emotional Impact and Mood: Through the low perspective the Marine Iguana is looking impressive and the background is blurred. Very nice!
The lava Lizard on the head is adding humour.
