Meadow Morning

Lupine and Corn Lilies, Sonora Pass

A detail of a meadow on the west side of Sonora Pass above 9,000’. I cropped a bit from the bottom. I also used a TK Make It Glow action on this one. That is something I don’t do very often at all, but this image seemed a good candidate for some ‘glow’–too much, or not enough?

The glow works very well on this image Preston. The flowers seem to pop right off the screen. I love the luminosity of the leaves as well.

Real nice processing and look. Feels a bit tight on the sides to me, but otherwise very nice. Glow things works well.

It is a splendid contrast between the purple and the greens, and the different shades of green. Very effective and certainly glowing.

Preston, I really like the layers, colors and the variety of shapes in this one. One nit that falls under personal preference or maybe what you really experienced, but the greens in lower third of the scene seem a touch too blue.
Very nice work on this intimate scene!

This came out very nicely Preston. This hue of green goes really well with those blue flowers and the glow processing gives vitality to all of it. I would add space to the left of the yellow flower if possible. But that’s about it really.

Preston,

Ahh, something I recognize! A beautiful and intimate rendition from my favorite meadow. I’m impressed you constrained yourself to the intimate details when the expanse of corn lily and lupine beyond were a sight to behold as well. But this is captured, processed and presented beautifully and stands firmly on it’s own. I think the “glow” is tamed (really wouldn’t know it) and I think the colors are right on. Although as we all know, and I know, I struggle often to render colors - especially the greens to no only what I “think” I remember and also what just looks good and natural. I think you’ve struck that balance beautifully.

If I had one minor suggestion, it would be to bring down the brightness of the small leave(s) directly behind and to the right of the larger lupine on the right. Just a bit bright behind the lupine there. Pretty picky stuff though.

This is gorgeous, Preston. The assortment of shapes and textures are nicely balanced and the rich colors are luscious. Processing looks real good. Typically I don’t use Make-it-glow but it works well here. If I were to be picky, I would concur with @Igor_Doncov on having a bit more space between the border and that one yellow flower

A lovely composition here, Preston. I like the combination of lupine and corn lilies - I don’t recall seeing another shot that incorporates them both in a cohesive way like this.

I’m not sure exactly what Make it Glow does, since it asks for a radius, but it seems roughly equivalent to a 30-point saturation increase through a Lights1 mask in Color blend mode to me. So it’s saturating the highlights and letting that saturation bleed out a bit, I guess. Greens are so hard to nail the saturation on, because they can look so dead and dingy without it (especially compared to how it looks polarized in person), and they’re also easy to take too far. Maybe for some this would be too saturated, but I think it actually gave it a classic film look (maybe Velvia?) like Bill Neill’s corn lily shots from the 80s. And that’s a good thing!

I would echo the above thoughts about giving room to the flower at the upper left, but I don’t think adding a small amount of space (if you even have it) will do it. I’m not sure where you are on the processing “ethics” spectrum, but I’d consider simply cloning it out entirely. This would balance the remaining arrangement of flowers nicely, and the single yellow flower that’s left would be a great detail on its own.

Thanks for your kind comments everyone! Here’s the edited version. I burned down the corn lily leaves as suggested by @Lon_Overacker and then cloned the yellow flower closest to the left edge, as suggested by @Alex_Noriega. It works better, I think. Any thoughts on the rework?

Nice work here, Preston. There is so much to love in the texture and shape of corn lily and lupine. This one works well.

I would clone out the remaining yellow flower as well.

Preston, both versions look good to me. The “clarity” really lets the flowers stand out even as the textures and shapes of all the green leaves also pop.

Hey Preston,

A wonderfully rich photo. I think the processing is done well. Too bad about having to clone out that second yellow flower. While it was close to the edge, it did work as a counter point to violet lupine blossoms from a color harmony perspective. I think the Make-It-Glow use was a good choice here. I find that using that processing technique is not for every image, but I have been surprised in that technique with a lot of images. You don’t need to apply it at 100% every time, but sometimes even a little just gives an image a certain pop that adds to the richness of the photo.
