Merced River Reflections + RP

An improved version, thanks to Bonnie! More contrast and a little “sharpening” on the rocks. I’m wondering if there was a bit of frost on the rocks – could have been.

Description

I’ve shot a lot of tree reflections here but none has ever really grabbed me. But when I saw this I broke fingernails grabbing the camera.

The colors were not interesting and conversion to B/W let me tweak relative tonalities. Minor retouching of junk in the water.

Outstanding Diane. The reflections are perfect and the composition is well balanced. Great call on going B&W.

Ah, beautiful. Great in B&W.
Only thing: I’d like to see the image a little bit wider, to see some more of the rocks on the bottom of the river. But that would bring the two stones that are the subject off the diagonal and I suppose you don’t want that.

Dear Diana, I think it is a fine image. The diagonal established by the two rocks provides a dynamic feel, which is balanced by the pattern of rocks scattered on the bottom of the river. Just a suggestion: The gravel on the bottom near the reflection of the distant rock has almost the same luminosity as the reflection of the rock. Would it generate better seperation of tonalities if you played with the luminosity of the gravel?

This is striking. The two subject rocks seem to be floating above the rest of the scene. Well seen, well photographed. :+1:

Diana, this is a beautiful image. Very pleasing to view. Well done.

Masterful!!

Hope the fingernails are doing fine. Really well done. I can see a square crop as well. Not necessarily better though.

Oh that’s wonderful. I ran to this thread about as fast as you ran to grab your camera, I think xD

The contrast of the rocks above and below the water is beautiful. Somewhat in the same vein as Igor’s comment, I’m feeling a tiny crop on the right side, as it feels like there’s just a touch too much weight on the left to my eye.

Lovely image and perhaps I’ll try for some reflections there myself when I visit Yosemite next month!

Also, I’ll have to steal the idea of adding a screenshot for technical details instead of typing it out.

A very unique and lovely image, and the BW treatment gives the image a surreal look.

Great work.

Outstanding Diane. I love the ethereal quality the reflection of the rocks has; they look like ghosts sailing in the stream. Black and white emphasizes that quality, and I love how you’ve processed the tones. The rocks below hold just enough interest to really set up the shot. For me, I wouldn’t change the crop; this looks perfect. No nits from me!

Thanks @Youssef_Ismail, @Han_Schutten, @Leo_Catana, @Don_Peters, @steven8, @SandyR-B, @Igor_Doncov, @Matthew_Chatham, @Mark_Orchard and @John_Williams! Even though I just re-worked this a few days ago, I don’t remember why I chose the crop from the edges – probably just to frame the diagonal but maybe intruding stuff. I’ll have another look.

Wow, this is a cut above the usual reflection photo! Positively surreal. I had the same thought as Les - I could see increasing the contrast a bit, separately for the river bottom and the main rocks/reflections. My idea - darkening the submerged rocks and increasing tonal contrast in the main rocks (both adjustments with an S curve in PS); also cropped to 5x7 because I wanted them to be equal distances from the edges of the frame (YMMV). However you slice it, though, this is an outstanding photo.

Hi Diane,
This is outstanding! The two rocks and their reflections just seem to be hovering above the submerged rocks in the Merced. I usually prefer just a little more contrast in my images, but I think the lower contrast works beautifully here as I think it enhances the mood. I particularly like the rim light on the reflection of the FG rock. The slightly off center framing of the rocks works well and adds a little visual tension. No suggestions from me.
