It’s been quite some time since I posted something here, so … Lo and behold Meteora, a rather unique location in Northern Greece where one can hike among vertical rock columns. The name of this place refers to these geological formations: ‘Hovering in the sky’. What makes the trail even more dramatic are the numerous old Greek Orthodox Monasteries that are perched on top of many of these rock columns. This picture was taken from one of those monasteries, back in early January.
I would have thought that this was an aerial photograph. I think the flat light works really well here. It gives the image some sort of abstract feel to it. I really like how I could enjoy the image in both sizes: the small (thumbnail) and the large size (when you click on it). The details that show up in the larger size are exquisite.
Definitely a unique landscape. I like that there’s a strong abstract quality to the image. Takes me a bit to figure out what I’m looking at and it fun working to make it make sense.
Nikos, this is a terrifically interesting piece of geography. With the flat light, the abstract feel is the primary attraction. Your words convey a fascination with the vertical depth of the place, and with the historic monasteries. Seems to me that the image would convey those more convincingly if it had some shadowing burned (or History Brush/Multiply) along some of the faces of the columns. Maybe find a way to accentuate the monastery on the left a bit. Attached is an attempt to illustrate, but it is a bit rushed. I hope it does not detract much from the dizzying abstract appeal of your presentation.
Hi @Dick_Knudson thank you for putting in the time to suggest a more ‘punchy’ version if I could say it like that… I do like it. I had my back and fourths on the amount of detail, contrast etc I wanted to use here, and went for a more toned down result… goes without saying that if I revisited the image on another day I would probably come up with smth different myself Now, on the monastery on the left… what monastery on the left?
Wonderfully abstract Nikos. Looks like something from the movie Avatar or some other planet. Would be a killer puzzle. The composition is really good ad I like both the punchy version and the lower contrast version. Like you said, it depends on what day you are looking at this. I change my thought process on my images all the time. What a neat place to photograph. It certainly does look like a drone or aerial image. Love it.
What a cool and interesting landscape and I think you did an excellent job capturing it! I’d love to see this printed big on a wall so that I could study all of the fine details.
Thank you for the feedback @Tom_Nevesely … Truth is that I have the same feeling everytime I see this image. It feels like it is well suited for a large print… I’ll probably go for it
