Mist Morning On Bubble Pond

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I’m revisiting some older files that I have bypassed over the years with new eyes. About the only things I did to the file were some dehaze as you can see and crop. I’m not fond of the right third of the image. Should I crop it off to just beyond the bare ground? Or any alternative crops of original image?

Specific Feedback

Beside my crop question any and all comments and critiques are welcome.

Technical Details

Nikon D800, 80-200mm, 1/125 & f/11, ISO 400, don’t know why, maybe windy,

Michael . the first one is the good crop and dehase in my opinion.

Another lovely one! I don’t mind the bare ground and I like the trees on the right. The crop and tonal tweaks are gorgeous, but I think I like the tiny bit more room at the bottom in the original.

That right third doesn’t bother me at all. In fact, I like it quite a lot. No, I would not crop it. I think the tree on the right edge with all of the branches going sideways sort of mimics that tree on the left side of the image and balances the scene nicely. I also like the red leaves on the ground in the bare spot where you are talking about cropping. The foreground brush sort of centers the trees which I like. That one wavy tree coming out of the bottom of the frame sort of grabs my eye but I’m not sure about eliminating it. It’s kind of whimsical. I don’t think I can really help you with this one because I like it so much. I got nothin for you. Nice image, Michael!

Hi Mike,
My vote is to keep the crop as is as I think it has a nice balance with the birch trees. I also think you hit the sweet spot with the dehaze and the autumn colors look great. That one birch tree on the left is my favorite from Beaver Dam Pond because it has this wonderful character about it . No suggestions from me.

Michael, I too think the original post looks fine. It shows a very inviting fall scene, where the birch trunks stand out and create bright spots that pull my eyes through the scene. I do think it’s a bit yellow. The dehaze improvement is pretty dramatic.

Michael,

Put me down for loving the original post, including crop and NO, the right 1/3 is not an issue, in fact I think the longer format enhances the scene.

Good job on the dehaze slider - just right. I like that there is still some haze present as it works to set the mood.

Other than that, great processing overall; colors and saturation. Not sure I would change anything.

Is this part of the series you are working on?

I’m right in line with the others; both the crop and dehaze are really nice. I think the right third fits in fine and wouldn’t crop it.

What a wonderful image, @Michael_Lowe. Your more contrasty, cropped version really sings. Even with the additional contrast the fog is still a presence, and the subtle colors have more energy. I’m always a sucker for photos like this and yours is truly a masterpiece.

Thanks @Lon_Overacker, @David_Haynes, @John_Williams, @Diane_Miller, @Ed_Lowe, @Ben_van_der_Sande, @Mark_Seaver and @Bret Edge for the comments. Much appreciated.

@John_Williams “Is this part of the series you are working on?”
Quite possibly. Originally, I was thinking of something along the lines of beyond the icons, exploring lesser known areas of our national park systems. Yeah I know. Not very original. But then I came to the realization that probably 75% of my NP images come from one park, Acadia NP. So don’t know if I have enough variation.

I really like this image as presented and if it were mine, I don’t think I would change a thing. Even though you brought up the contrast with the dehaze, it still has a bit of that misty feeling that is so appealing and the arrangement of the trees is really nice. It has a flow to it and it feels natural and not forced.
