Morning Rays

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is an early morning photo of a sunrise and sun rays peaking through heavy cloud cover at the Pismo Beach (California) coast. I like this photo because of the rays coming through the small opening, and the bits of light reflecting on the ocean.

Specific Feedback

Looking for feedback on the composition (too much rock/land on the left side of the photo?) and crop (specifically at the bottom). Would the photo be better with more of a crop at the bottom? I’m also concerned that the photo might be too dark.

I don’t think the photo’s too dark. Looks pretty natural to me. I think there’s enough sea stacks in the water to offset the heavy left side. JMHO I don’t know if it would be worth it to darken the bird in the cloud opening. Probably too small.

I’m with you on those sun rays, very nice,. Partly because of them, the top half of the image is much stronger to me than the bottom half. It has more interest for the eye to wander through (sea stacks, palm trees, variation in the light, etc.) I’d be tempted to crop some of the bottom off, as you ask, either to a pano or sacrificing some of that left side. I don’t think it’s too dark.

Hi Richard,
I totally agree with you; the crepuscular rays are wonderful as is the light on the ocean. For my tastes the image is not to dark. My only suggestion would be a crop from the bottom to make this more of a pano as well as a little from the left side due to the land being a little heavy. Really nice peaceful scene you shared. BTW, welcome back.

Thank you all for your feedback! We are thinking of framing this one to hang on a wall in the home so I appreciate the comments and will definitely crop it a bit from the bottom.
