I was out early for a hike in an area not far from my house. For once we had some cloud cover. It produced some vivid color.

All comments are welcome. I’m curious as to how others determine the appropriate white balance with a shot like this. I wound up using daylight white balance.

I’ve been enjoying your desert images without time to comment much, but this one deserves a pause! The subdued colors of the land work well with the sky, especially the darker tones at the top. The cloud layer gives a feeling of receding into a vast distance, and the color at the horizon is lovely! It looks both realistic enough that there is no cringe factor and supernatural enough to grab attention. Well done, for my taste!
I am so used to seeing your expressive Palo verde images I had to look twice. I don’t know how much help this will be, but I pretty much use auto WB anymore and then adjust in PS to what looks natural to me. As far as this scene I think the colors look very natural and realistic. I am really enjoying that soft subtle light on those FG rocks on the left side as well as the warm color in the sky. You definitely made good use of those clouds. Very nicely done.
This seems like such a simple scene yet extremely effective. The rocks are really well done in particular. Not all rocks have enough sheen to pull off that type of tonal richness after sunset. That lower left corner makes the image for me but the gold sky is great. Initially I thought you didn’t need that much sky but cropping off that darker part up top is not a good idea. Place the image is about space.
