Morning run

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

24 hours a day freight trains run through the Yakima River Canyon. It was a cold, foggy morning when this one passed. I liked this because of the lighted tracks and the dark appearance which fairly captures what I saw.

Specific Feedback

The painterly appearance of the foliage is how the photo came out. I did not do anything to change its appearance. Not sure why it looks that way; perhaps the 1600 ISO combined with -2/3 exp comp and cloudy ISO.

Technical Details

Canon 7DII; 100/400 at 400; -2/3; ISO cloudy; spot; 1/2500th.

Jim,

Outstanding photo! I think you are correct about the “painterly effect” on the foliage it is the high ISO causing it but given the luminosity level overall I think it works perfectly. I too love how the two rails are reflecting the train’s headlamp. It’s a very evocative photo! I also love the subtle highlights on the top of the train cars. Great work.

Oooh, nice! Somewhat sinister, although the light on the rails is beautiful.

I like this a lot, Jim. The darkness really works for my taste. I’d be tempted to take a bit off the top, but that’s just my taste. The light on the rails and the dimly lit train cars are fantastic. I really need to figure out how to spend some time over there.

Veeery cool!! All said above!

I think the appearance of the foliage is due to the lack of dynamic range of the camera, made worse by the high ISO. Trying to dig out dark detail just gives a very flat, almost posterized look, due to the few steps of tonal range in the darks… But here it works very well!!

Jim, a very provocative image, captured well. The dark tones are perfect.
Any more room on the left, to move the train to the right to be less centered?
Excellent!

Jim: I love trains and what a good image this is. As a boy I was able to go to Oregon from Indiana almost every summer on the Great Northern, Northern Pacific and Union Pacific. I still have wonderful memories of those trips. Like Sandy I think this would be a bit better from a composition standpoint if the train was shifted right in the frame but otherwise this is fantastic. Most excellent. >=))>

A very well-deserved image, Jim - congrats on the EP!

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I have no more room to the left, but wish I did. Dennis, I am very thankful for the EP.

You could probably invent a bit more with content-aware fill or generative fill, but a crop would do it:

Diane, Thanks. Looks good. Jim

Such a cool image Jim. I love the darkness and the spark of light. Congrats on a great EP.

Ed, Thank you.
