Mountain fog

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I don’t encounter fog very often . This foggy scene appealed to me.

Specific Feedback

I wasn’t quite sure where to set the white point and how much contrast to use. Is it too bright or dark?

Technical Details

ISO 2000, 88mm, f/8, 1/5000th.

Don, I can see why you were attracted to this lovely, moody scene. I am no master at adjusting color and post processing, though I feel the iumage coulkd be a tad brighter and it seems to have a slight yellow color cast. Great subject matter and I like the composition. Blue Ridge Mountains I assume?

Thanks for the feedback, Michael. Yes, this was in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Excellent image Don. I couldn’t find a way to improve it. I thought a bit less sky but yours was better. Then I thought of cooling it under the theory that fog is cool but then it looks less painterly and less inviting as well. I also thought less black in that left corner but a crop makes it looks more washed out and less original. That bright bush and dead tree in all that darkness greatly improves the image. However, if there is one suggestion it would be to raise the black slightly in the left corner. I think they should be dark but not that dark.

This reminds of some of the great scenery the Lowes’ often play around in.

To my eye, this has a red cast. If this was shot with a sunrise/sunset spilling light into the fog that might be accurate, otherwise I wouldn’t expect it to be so strong. Here’s a comparative version moving the color cooler.

Hi Don,
I love foggy scenes so this is right up my alley. I always find foggy atmospheric images to be peaceful and serene and this one is no exception. Like @Michael_Lowe I could see this just a bit brighter as it looks a touch dark. I also like @John_Williams rework with removing the warm cast. Very nicely done. I hope you have some more from that day to share with us.

Great catch on the color cast John. Really improves the image in my eye. This is very similar to either Michael or Ed Lowes shot of a mountain with depth and angled hills and this one is equally intriguing. I very much like Johns version as he took care of the lower left corner which @Igor_Doncov pointed out was a tad too dark. I know it seems odd but I like the dead trees in the image. It provides just a little bit of contrast to the scene.
You may want to selectively warm some of those yellow trees in the midground on John’s redo but otherwise, I like this a lot without any other nits.
