Mountain Shadows and Light

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I had the opportunity to visit the Eastern side of the Washington Cascades near Wenatchee to actually try and take some shots of my son in a very serious mountain bike race. Just prior to the race was awed by the views and naturally had to take a few landscape images. I am fascinated with the differences in the makeup of the eastern Cascades compared to the heavily treed western side. So seeing the light and undulations creating deep shadows, I had to grab one or two shots.

Specific Feedback

I am looking for general feedback. I sometimes get concerned that there is a lot going on visually with valleys. I actually made a pretty significant crop from the original in the attempt to focus the viewed toward the middleish slope with the. most light.

Technical Details

I am really enjoying the textures created by the wonderful light. I think the pano crop works nicely. You might consider doing a little cloud sculpting to bring out more detail in the sky. Also, is that a tower on the tallest peak on the left?

Nicley done, sir!

Hi Pat, I also really like the use of light in this image to draw us into the scene. Love seeing the highlighted crevices with the lower darker portions. Well seen and taken.

Allen and Preston thanks for taking the time to comment and share your thoughts. Preston you are correct about the tower…I missed that one. Although I opted to leave the house in the lower right corner. It doesnt bother me and gives a sense of scale.

Hi Pat,
The soft beautiful light has created some lovely shadows and added some nice depth to this scene. The pano format works well and I like the trees along the ridge line as they add a sense of scale to the image. I am on the fence about the house as it does catch my eye a little with the white tones situated in the greens. Just my opinion of course. Very nicely done.

This is lovely, Pat. As an image, it’s got all the right stuff: sweet light, a sky that has something but not too much to distract from the mountains, the little house indicating scale. The composition works…it’s not centered, it’s got some nice asymmetry in the lines of the various ridges, canyons, etc.

What I especially love about it, and it’s more of a ecosystem/geological fascination, is how the trees stop right at the ridge, as if the rain doesn’t make it one inch beyond the crest.

No suggestions from me, though “cloud sculpting” (great phrase) and tower removal might be fun to play with. I kind of like the little house (for scale, as you said), but I also see Ed’s point.

Ed and Maeylynne, thanks for your comments and thoughts. One thing that I have a little discomfort about it the lower left corner. It seems to have an artificial feel to it and perhaps needs some very slight burning in?

The additional image is a copy of the raw file at capture. I am very open to alternate crops to improve upon my version.

Very nice, Pat.. The light is gorgeous.

Don, thanks I appreciate your encouragement!
