Mud Puddle Moire

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

We don’t get low enough temps for a long enough period of time to freeze ponds and such, so I have to search out little pockets of water that might have formed ice. This is water frozen in a small mud puddle.

Specific Feedback

Any feedback is welcome.

Chris, this is a lovely “mud puddle” abstract. The textures in the ice give it a very painterly, impressionist look where the swirls add a good sense of movement that is enhanced by the sweeping line near the top.

I love the curves and patterns in this one, Chris. The blues and browns also go very well together. I could see where a bit more depth of field might have been nice as I like the definition of the small features in the thumbnail more than in the full size version.

Good eye to have seen this! The texture and pattern are appealing, and I like the comp and muted color.

Your searching certainly paid off!

Chris, nice catch! Isn’t nature wonderful to present us with these abstracts free for the taking? You chose a very interesting area; liking the muted brown and blue hues that seem to compliment each other. And then come the lines; curvy superhighways which branch off into smaller roads allowing you to roam freely over the landscape.

Thanks, Dennis. Should I have used a smaller aperture to increase DOF?

@Jim_Lockhart @Jim_Erhardt @Mark_Seaver Thank you for your insightful comments.

I think so. I’ve tried stacking things like that and sometimes it works and sometimes not. I don’t think your depth was enough to need it.

Nicely seen. When I look at close up/abstract work like this, I try to think how the photographer decided what to focus in on and compose. With an image like yours, the flow of the lines works just so well. The larger main lines and the smaller icy lines. As someone else wrote, looks like a detail of a map and roads. Again, nice.

@patrick6 Thank you for your comment.

Chris, the flowing lines, textures, colours, and comp all come together here to make a very appealing image.
Nice work both in seeing this and processing it !

@SandyR-B Thank you!

This is incredibly beautiful, Chris! I love the textures and the colour gradient from blue/cool at the top to warm/yellow at the bottom. It doesn’t get much better than this!
