Russ, that is one fat & healthy looking snake. I do have many snake stories as a kid & young adult. Including face to face with a diamond back.
I have a copy of a photo that NPNer Rudy Ruberti shared back on NPN #1 of a HUGE Mojave Green from the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve off of Hwy138 years ago now. The chilling part was that Rudy said kids were freely running throughout the reserve not even knowing what lurked in the brush.
I wear snake guards more for the cholla cactus than snakes, but either way they are better than nothing.
Russ: I’m glad it was you taking this image. It may not be rational but I have an aversion to snakes and my wife is positively ruthless when she discovers them in the garden. A couple of my grandsons had a pet python and my wife insisted on it going to another house whenever we visited. Perhaps we will both soften, realizing that they can keep our garden clear of more destructive vermin. I’m going to move this to Wildlife as it is a more appropriate subject for that gallery. >=))>
Hi Bill. Your comments are always interesting. Thanks for helping me as I am learning the ropes at nature photographers.net network!
A couple years ago a large garden snake (non-poisonous) got into our garage so when I got out of my car it was there a couple feet away from me! My adrenalin immediately propelled me to the back of the garage and I hit the door hard. Then, my visiting youngest daughter came out, grabbed a broom, and calmly guided the snake out of our garage and into a nearby garden. I’ll never forget how I felt that day!
It is always spooky to run across these guys in the deep grass Russell. I had one like it last year in our area. I was surprised to see a mating pair of Southern Pacific rattlesnakes less than a quarter mile from the beach. Mating Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes - #7
