Description
Seen in the neighborhood lake spillway behind my house. These snakes gather in a small pool to try to catch sunfish that are carried down the spillway.
Specific Feedback
Any.
The first two images show a pair of snakes waiting for a fish to come in the spillway. The last image was taken in full sun which I think shows the true beauty of these snakes.
Technical Details
Canon 90D, Sigma 150-600mm, hand held
ISO 4000, f8, shutter speed varies.
Processed in DXO PureRaw 4 and Photoshop.

Wow, Allen, that is a pretty interesting subject, good find! I like the crisp detail in all of the snakes. My favorite is the second image with the “brontosaurus” pose of the snake on the right. Most of the snake images I have seen try to show a more menacing side of these reptiles but I really like yours. I might crop some of the water on the left out. To my eye, it is not adding anything to the image and acts like a frame that is too large, taking away from the subject. Maybe a square crop? Other than that I think this is a superb snake habitat image you captured!
Wow, exceptional! Wonderful snakes! Crisp detail in all, vibrant colours, and natural environment. You even caught the tongues and all the eyes. I like the crops as you chose, to allow the surrounding area. Maybe even a little more on the left of #1.
VERY cool images!
Hi Allen. These are extraordinary images. I really like how you have blended excellent photographic skills with a really interesting account from the natural world.
So cool. This reminds me that during the winter, folks are sometimes seeing snakes resting in the thermal runoff in Yellowstone. Definitely a sight I’d like to witness.
This is a nice selection (I appreciate seeing the last shot, so we can get a sense of how colorful they are), but I am fond of the surprise double in #1.
