Critique Style Requested: Standard
The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
This photo was taken at the Celery Fields sanctuary in Sarasota Florida. A group of Nanday Parakeets were congregating at a feeder and I wanted to capture the beauty of these birds without showing the whole subject, I am experimenting with close up bird images to bring out the texture and color of the subjects.
Specific Feedback
General feedback. Any suggestions on close-up bird photography.
Technical Details
256mm, 1600 ISO, f6.3, 1/640 sec.

Welcome back, Bill. This is an interesting image and I love the colors and the composition. To my eye, it looks as if the only portion of the wing in focus are parts of three primaries. For my taste, when I’m trying to do a real close-up of plumage, I like to get it all in focus, but that’s just my taste. That small area does attract attention and act as a focal point where if it were all in focus, there might not be a good focal point to anchor the image.
Overall a very interesting approach and one that should generate some interesting discussion.
Good to be back Dennis and thank you for the feedback. Always appreciated. You are right about focus point. Lately I have been trying to look for the smaller composition within the original photo. I find this particularly difficult with birds in flight or other movement. Thanks, Bill
Bill - great idea here. The bird and wing are beautiful, and the wing position is perfect.
I agree that, for an image like this, sharpness throughout would be ideal.
Very interesting look at the perfectly-deployed wing. The BG is just right for my taste and the composition works well here. A smaller aperture would have helped but you probably needed the fast SS so you’re in the common quandary for action shots. The newest noise reduction programs are amazing so don’t fear high ISOs. Noise is easier to correct than motion blur or missed focus.
