Nature's Canvas

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was out on a boat not too far from the rocky shore of British Columbia, busily capturing images of a family of Grizzly Bears. The natural patterns on this rock wall were so impressive that I had to interrupt my wildlife pursuit to photograph the landscape in front of me. The patterns, layers and colors on the rock surface, in contrast to the deep green of the trees above, immediately caught my eye.

Specific Feedback

Hi Ted,
I like what you were going for here as it would catch my eye also. This has a wonderful sense of depth created by all the colorful layers of rock along with the greenery up top. Did you happen to capture any of just the rock as that would also make for a great subject. Beautifully done!

Thanks Ed. I indeed captured an image of just a section of that rock wall, which I feel makes for a great natural abstract. I’ve included it here.

No Way! We just left the BC coast! We were in Desolation Sound sea kayaking, so our wildlife contacts were all of the marine variety (although we did see a black bear mama & 2 cubs). And we CERTAINLY saw a lot of what you’ve photographed here - I was immediately drawn to bring this one up big so I could understand if what I was seeing was a reflection or not. I loved these scenes (I’m really missing being on the ocean), and what you have here is a really nice representation of it. Compositionally, that diagonal crack coming down from the green on the left is well placed, and your treatment of the contrasting colors of the green above and the dark earth below really sets this off. The abstract is great too!

Very cool textures. Personally, I feel like the right half of the image is strong, but the left doesn’t really add to it. I love the version you posted with just the variegated layers of rock. Makes for a great abstract. However, the green bushes do add context. Nice capture.

Thanks. I thought it was a really unique scene.

Thanks so much. It sure is a beautiful part of the world up there. Besides seeing the Grizzlies we also saw some Humpbacks and Orcas.
