BC Bear

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

We feel so fortunate to have witnessed these massive glaciers of BC beauty before they’ve disappeared. And this particular instance I felt wildly fortunate to have caught this bear ambling across this ridge line in front of one. What a photo bomb! I did have to enlarge him a bit to make him a visible part of the scene. Hope that’s ok.
We saw so many glaciers (& bears!) on this trip, we ended up calling ourselves the Geezer Glacier Gazers !

I’m interested in anything you have to say…

Wow! That’s quite a scene! I did not notice the bear until I looked at the full-size version. Your composition is very nice, and I like contrast between the FG ridge, the ice, and the sky. Some areas of the glacier are very bright, and I wonder if you could bring up any detail there without losing the luminosity of the ice?

We have small ‘pocket’ glaciers in the Sierra in the Palisades, Ritter Range, and Mount Lyell, but nothing remotely of this scale. The glaciers I saw in Peru were on this scale and I was awed by them, so I can imagine your joy and awe!

Wait til you start photographing Geysers.

You mean like this??? Yeah, then we become the Geezer Geyser Gazers…

Yeah, it was midday, unfortunately, & I didn’t do enough to control the brightness of the glacier. Now that you mention it though, I might try going back & seeing if there’s anything else I could do to mitigate that. Thanks!

That’s an impressive glacier. Glancing at the thumbnail, I thought I was looking at snow capped mountains. The only critique I have is the aforementioned clipped highlights. You could probably adjust the raw file a little in LR or ACR. Nice shot.

Connie,

Wow! You say that’s a glacier? And not just rugged mountains with snow on them? Yikes! This is a perspective that one does not see… This is quite impressive!

Although the bear is still small in the frame (as it should be if we’re considering scale here!) And thank you for the full disclosure - that’s important. But the cool part is that you got to witness the bear grace your scene. Very cool indeed.

I do agree a bit with Preston on some of the bright areas. However, there is enough detail throughout the glacier that it’s not a huge deal. I do like the balance of all the elements in the frame including the sky and cool clouds.

BC’s mountains & glaciers absolutely dwarf what we have here in the lower 48. I grew up skiing the Wasatch Mtns of Utah (& they are fabulous), but after this we would joke that you could drop them in the middle of these mtn ranges and they would be swallowed up.
