Nest Building Time

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Multiple green herons are spending the Summer at the Duck Pond. Normally, I was at work when nest building was going on. Fortunately, I noticed multiple birds heading into a grape-vine covered ash and setup for the shot. The move quickly and are in clear view for a couple of seconds so many of the shots were of heron fragments. Luckily I was able to get a view that are worth posting.

Specific Feedback

A fairly hefty crop and I left the OOF grape vines in the frame for context. How do you like the comp?

Super wing spread here. I like the leaves coming in as they add some variation to the bg. Such delicate little things these greenies are. Haven’t yet seen one this year, but they are so much more shy than the blues. Terrific catch and well worth the prep. I could see cloning out the bright bottom leaf on the left edge, but that’s minor. I also really like the little bit of primary feathers in the middle of each wing - something not often seen.

Most definitely worth sharing, Jim. Gorgeous flight shot with exquisite detail. I like the inclusion of the grape leaves as they help lend context to the image. as do the out of focus background leaves. I think this crop works, though my personal taste would call for taking a bit off the bottom and right. I think the orphan half grape leaf could go even though it helps make a kind of triangle of that feature.

A fine image as posted.

Excellent flight shot of the heron, Jim. Great detail and color. The background is nice and works well with the heron. I like the grape leaves, though would probably remove the leaf in the mid left and the bit in the RUC. Great capture.

Hi Jim
The framing really works with this Heron flying up into the trees. The heron has good coloring and feather detail, and the stick is a plus.

Wonderful!! (And a masterful capture!) Fantastic detail and I love the grape leaves but do agree to prune the lone one on the edge. Nice to see the alula deployed – those feathers act to fine-tune direction and kill some lift on final approach. (Airplanes have slats for the same purpose.)

Lucky you! Green herons are few and far between out here, and always skulking in dense foliage. Great image here- lovely pose, BG, and action. The leaves in the upper left add a lot of interest, but might be just a tad bright, as they draw my eye from the heron
Very appealing image, Jim.

Nice catch Jim. So tough to get these birds in flight. I like seeing the underwing and the branch in the beak is great. Crop looks good to me. Lone leaf noted above. A fine image.

Wow! Wonderful image showing all the under-carriage. I love the diagonal direction of the bird. The stick in the beak is the icing on the cake. I love the background and agree with removing the bright leaf on the edge.
