Nuthatch

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I got this red-breasted nuthatch out back this morning. They are a little tricky to get because they do not hold still very long.

Specific Feedback

Cropping? Anything? I decided to let that upper BG twig alone. It didn’t seem to hurt anything. What say you?

Technical Details

Z9, 180-600 lens, Nikon 1.4 TC, monopod, cropped to 2449 x 2797, 1/1000th, f 9, 1260mm, ISO 6400.

Hi Dave, love seeing these nuthatches - one of my favorite birds. I like the classic pose with a good look at the eye and breast. I don’t think the upper branch adds anything so I think it could go. Details seem soft probably due to post processing.

It’s a matter of artistic choice, Dave, but I’d remove that stick. Great pose.

Dave, I have a stick in my recent upload that is more of an intrusion than this one :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:. Actually, the log and stick on top provide some nice framing for the Nuthatch. Good lighting, detail, and soft BG all help to create this wonderful image. We have plenty in CT as well, and one of the few birds willing to cling to a wire suet feeder besides the wood peckers.
