Öland, Sweden

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Öland is an incredibly flat island in Sweden, located in the Baltic Sea. Often the horizon is the only line. However, there are characteristic stone fences, richly textured grasses, scattered trees, and, if lucky, cloud formations. My idea behind this image was to organize the elements as a zigzag-pattern: To lead the eye from the ladder crossing the fence, along the stone fence to the right, then left along the horizon, and then right again into the sky and its ominous, looming clouds.

I think you succeeded pretty well in your intention here, Leo. My eye does follow the fence and turn left at the tree, follow the horizon back to the clump of bushes and then back to the stile crossing the fence. It doesn’t immediately go to the sky, I think because most of the drama there is at the top of the frame and there’s less contrast lower down to lead the eye up into it. It looks like there might be potential in the lower clouds on the left for a bit more drama to stair step the viewer’s eye into the clouds. That said, I really like this image as you posted it.

Perfect in B&W. Great tone especially in the sky and grass in the FG. Well Captured …

Yes, this image definitely has a really nice flow to it. I love that the fence/wall is there but that it’s mostly obscured by the grass and thus feels more like it’s part of the landscape rather than just cutting trough it. Also, your processing and B&W conversion is wonderful and I like the bright whites and the dark blacks. Nice work!

@Dennis_Plank , @Gill_Vanderlip , @Tom_Nevesely , thank you so much for your comments. Dennis, I’ll take another look at the clouds on the left side, thanks. Best, Leo

Hi Leo,
I like this scene. It raises so many questions: What were the fence and style built for, grazing? Were they used as barricades during WW I or II? What are they used for now? I agree that the clouds could use some additional work. Don’t you just wish the patch of blue (black swath) were just a little lower?
