On the Move

Redo

Here’s a redo incorporating Barbara’s suggestions.

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I cropped this to a custom size to give the leopard room to walk into. Otherwise very ittle done in post. This frame appealed to me as the dust cloud emphasized the leopard’s forward movement.

Specific Feedback

In general, what do you think of strongly backlit images and do you think that the background detracts from the image?

Technical Details

R5 and 100-500 lens at 1/500, f/7.1 and Auto ISO at 1250

Richard, where did you find this magnificent animal? Without the backlighting, it would melt into the background. I like the crop which emphasizes the leopard’s movement. I wonder if it is possible to separate the leopard from the background by editing the value of the background. I downloaded the image and darkened the leopard, and lightened and desaturated the background. I also used the clarity filter in the TK9 (Tony Kuyper) filters to sharpen just the leopard. I am including a screenshot of the layers that I used in PS. This is just a suggestion. Thanks for sharing this photo with us.

It’s a killer frame, very nicely captured & framed !
I really liked @Barbara_Djordjevic 's treatment to the image, but I may settle somewhere between the two.

Cheers !

Barbara and Jagdeep: thank you for your comments. Barbara: a special thanks to you for all your post processing work whifch is really, really good.

Great backlit view of this mysterious leopard Richard. I like what @Barbara_Djordjevic has done, but agree with @JRajput that it should be somewhere in the middle to keep more of a lurking impression.

I just love that little cloud of dust. Makes the whole image work for me. I do prefer your original to the re-edit, btw. I think the darker of your two is better, and frankly of the three versions seen in the thread I think it’s the most natural. The cloud and the slight rim lighting provide enough contrast as is… in some ways, the light is the main subject rather than the leopard, so there’s no need to overdo it making the cat stand out, IMO.

Max: thanks for your comments. I also prefer my original version but in general, I like to try what others have suggested.
