Pacific Wren

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Usually I find these birds deep in the forest or skulking in the underbrush requiring very high ISO’s. This little guy was out in the open with some sun shining on it. And, I was able to get fairly close.

Specific Feedback

Any thoughts appreciated.

Technical Details

Canon R5; 100-500 at 270 mm; 1/1000 at f5.6; ISO 4000(still high, but need a fast shutter speed for these fast moving birds.)

It always makes me cringe seeing birds casually in a thorn bush that would tear me to shreds. But they do it all the time and live to tell the tale. Especially these guys - so loud!! Excellent details (I can see a reflection of a building in the bird’s eye!) and contrast between the soft feathers and the daggery thorns. I might clone out the branch behind that curves over the head, but that’s about it.

I like this one. Nice pose and. good look at the beak..
The detail on the plumage is excellent. I like the depth of field with a slightly out of focus tail feathers.

This is downright cheating, Allen. I’ve yet to get a shot of one of these. They’re always singing and I can never spot them. I don’t mind the curved branch above the head-it mimics the curvature of the head rather nicely. Superb plumage detail, nice eye contact and a great wren pose. Excellent work.

Wow. Nice framing with the thornbush and great to see this secretive bird so well. Great to get the focus spot on the head. Well done.

Hi Allen,
The thorny perch makes this one for me. I love these little guys, and seeing it straddling a wide space between thorny branches just communicates so much attitude! Fantastic detail too.

Wonderful perch, BG and pose, with such nice detail in the bird! A small nit – I wonder about extending the cut leaf in the LR corner. For me, it’s one of those can’t unsee things.
