Self Critique

When I was shooting this photo I wasn’t attempting to shoot anything nearly as large as this turned out. My main goal was to capture a wall mural sized image of Palouse Falls at sunrise. It turned out fairly well. The one thing that bugs me is that the pond at the bottom of the waterfall seems distorted towards the bottom of the image.

Creative direction

As a wall mural photographer, at any location I shoot my goal is to capture the worlds largest photo ever take at that location. At the same time I want to capture the emotion and grandeur of the scene. It is fairly easy to shoot a technically good image that meets my size goals. It is far more difficult to capture the aesthetic and emotional aspects. I want my viewer to virtually feel like they are experiencing the scene in person.

Specific Feedback

As a photographer my specialty is Gigapixel Wall Murals. This photo is my personal best being the largest image I have ever created at over 15 Gigapixels. I didn’t really set out to set any records but as it turned out this one is the largest I have ever done.

Description

We had arrived at this area the day before and my wife and I scouted the park the evening before I shot this. I got up well before sunrise and drove to the park. I hiked to the location I had identified the previous evening and set up my gear. As the sun began to peek over the horizon I started shooting. Using a 300mm focal length, the HFD at f/11 is 869 ft, which required focus bracketing for any object closer than 435 ft. Most of the left side, right side and lower portion of the image is shoot focus bracketed.

John, the details and depth are amazing (no real surprise…)! It looks like the sun was high enough to hit the wall on the right, which adds a nice burst of gold to the foreground and help lead my eyes into the distance. Never having been there I can’t speak to distortion in the plunge pool, but this looks fine to me. What great fun to scroll through your online version…finding the abandoned phone poles…

We spent a day at this spot over the summer. Sub-optimal time of year to be there and the sky was overcast, so overall conditions just weren’t that good. But…it was still quite a sight to see and photograph. You’ve done well here. I can’t imagine the technical difficulty of pulling off an image like this. The pool is definitely distorted but those who haven’t been there probably wouldn’t recognize it. The overall contrast feels a little bit too low but that could also be natural given the time of day this was shot. I bet a huge print would be amazing to explore.

Amazing work - is that a cat eating a fish on the slope running down from the benches under those green trees?

Great light and detail in this image. The only possible issue is that a little more space at the bottom would hav been to move the green layer further from the edge of the frame. I suspect that wasn’t possible though.

The light and the colours both look amazing here. I especially the yellows in combination with blues. It’s been a while since I visited here so I don’t know if it’s even possible but I wish I could see just a bit more of the river snaking through the canyon - maybe by shooting from a smidge more to the left.
