Phoebe Takes Flight

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The graceful beauty of a bird in flight. I often bird with my camera and try to capture behavior that is hard for the eye to see.

Specific Feedback

Interested in feedback on background and framing and general impact.

Technical Details

Was trying out the Pre-capture setting on my Sony A7V. I increased my shutter speed to 1/8000 sec to ‘freeze’ the action. After observing this Black Phoebe for awhile I positioned myself to obtain a neutral background and frame the image giving the bird room to fly, and waited for the Phoebe to leave its perched position

Welcome, Ted. A fine post of this Phoebe taking off. Getting this kind of shot without pre-capture is a real feat, though we used to have a guy named Kurt Bowman who must have had cat reflexes, because he could seem to pull it off regularly. Even with pre-capture, it takes considerable patience and concentration. A nice job on the settings to freeze the action. I’d be tempted to add some canvas on the right, but this framing works pretty well given it’s angle in the frame. For some reason when scrolling it looks to my eye as if taking maybe 1/4 of the area under the bird off seems to feel more balanced to my eye.

A really fine image and I look forward to seeing many more from you and getting you input on other people’s images.

Excellent detail, Ted, and nice pose. I like that there is some color in the background. I could see more room on the right for the Phoebe to fly into.

Hi Ted
Really nice work. Love the head turn, with eye contact. The framing works for me and the feather detail and blacks look good.

Wonderful capture!! The framing works for me – my only suggestion would be to lighten the darker area in the top left corner, just a bit. Welcome – I hope to see a lot more of your images!
