Excellent head detail and chest detail. I like the light. But I think it’s the water in combination with the Grebe and its head turned that really make the picture. Looks like you had some light (i.e.: able to shoot below iso-1000 and the Pacific Northwest)

Too much light this weekend…
Yes to iso400 but I get a lot of blown out whites on ducks in this sunny weather.
Might be perfect tomorrow.
This was at 10 in the morning and I could barley hang on to the whites on
this grebes bill!

Nice low angle, Dan and a good composition. The depth of field seems quite shallow with the bill being slightly soft. Nice job on the exposure.

Love seeing grebes. These guys are some real hunters! IQ looks very good, and you def have some detail in that bright beak. All the browns work together nicely. He/she is kicking up a now bow wave. If I were to look for something to improve the image, I’d probably clone out the two blue spots in the water.

That brown eye is really intriguing to me. Well captured and the detail in the plumage looks good. I see what Dennis means about the soft bill. Nice head on shot.
