While visiting the Los Angeles Arboretum I noticed a small stream was partially covered with pond scum. I was curious what this looked like up close so I zoomed in with my telephoto lens and was surprised to find how interesting the patterns and colors were. I enjoy making abstract photos of nature and I thought this small scene would make a perfect abstract subject.

Pertinent Technical Details
I photographed this hand held with my Canon R5 camera with my Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens. 1/800 shutter speed at f/11.0 ISO 1600.
Larry: Frame filling fantastic with wonderful details and colors. There is a lot to explore. I do notice some focus fall off in the URC area. You could probably crop this a bit tighter to eliminate that OOF section and not lose much impact. A really nice find and a fine capture. Glad to have you back and posting. >=))>
Wonderful!! These are very attractive little plants, with a very nice distribution of “clumps”. The olive green group just below center works as a nice center point. This would be a fascinating place to explore with a true macro or a super-macro.
Hope to see you posting more! Your web site is awesome!
@Larry_White , who know pond scum could look so cool. Good for you for looking a little close at something others would have dismissed as not photogenic. Going off Bill and Diane said, I think maybe a tighter crop more towards the middle area – losing top and right – would really bring out those shapes in the center and left. Again, good seeing.
I love photographing ponds as I find the life within them so fascinating. So I was particularly drawn to your lovely image. The colours are wonderful and make a beautiful, textured mosaic pattern.
Larry, this is a great looking batch of “pond scum”. The variety of colors makes for a fine abstract with the shapes of the leaves showing well and adding interest.
Welcome back. Larry! This is very cool! I agree with the crop suggestions already made. Also, you might consider dropping exposure down about 1/3 stop as this feels a tad bright to me. Other than that, this well done!

Great intimate landscape Larry! It is amazing what can be found when looking in close. The abstracts of nature are everywhere when we look. I even dove in further to the bottom left quadrant. I liked the light burgundy cluster on the lower left and its relationship with olive green group. The burgundy cluster looks like flower petals. If you don’t mind, I cropped and did some selective dodge/burning to highlight the clusters. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Harvey, you did a slendid job reworking my photo. Your version is better than mine. I’m going to take a second look at all my images from that day and use all the suggestions mentioned when I process them. Thanks a lot.
