White birds are always tough, Steve, especially against a very dark background like this one. I’m a big fan of shadow/highlight sliders in raw processors for white birds-you can do a lot to tweak them. While the tonality in this isn’t what I would normally try to achieve in processing one of these,it reminds me very strongly of 18th/19th century paintings of egrets and makes for a successful image on that basis.

Hi Steve
I agree with Dennis “reminds me very strongly of 18th/19th century paintings of egrets and makes for a successful image on that basis.”
Nice work.

A very nice portrait. The whites seem under control, but just barely. It is certainly artist’s choice to go high contrast, but this feels like a scene that is naturally just a bit softer. I like that there is some detail in the BG. The composition is uncomfortably tight on the right and bottom. Room is needed for the “virtual feet.” Even after that, I think it’s going to feel like there is too much on the left where not enough is happening.

I initially viewed this with a bright light shining on the screen and I thought the background was entirely black and I liked that effect. I’m not sure the background adds to the image, especially the blue seems out of place. I think the whites look good and the image makes for a fine portrait. Diane’s suggestions on cropping would be worth playing around with. As others have said, this is a rather artistic image. Nice job.
