Psychedelic Roots Again

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

It’s that time of year when the new, red alder roots are showing at the edge of the creek. There aren’t so many this year, but I managed to find a few small areas with decent access to see them.

Specific Feedback

Do the blobs of more purple-y color at the bottom bother you?

Technical Details

Two iPhone 14 photos composited in PS. Basic dodging/burning to even out exposure a bit, targeted color adjustment (to make the purple blob more blue), and a slight curve for contrast. I used the phone because these were right under vegetation and up against rocks, and the phone gave better access.

Bonnie, great use of the smartphone in what sounds like a tricky area to photograph. Awesome final image! The roots look like tentacles from a giant squid. I wouldn’t want to be in that water!

The purplish blobs don’t bother me. I hadn’t really noticed that area until I read your description. If you were inclined, you could try a slight crop in. That would also avoid that bright section of the root up top just left of center. Overall, nice work Bonnie!

Very cool!! I wouldn’t have guessed it is a composite, although it is artistically puzzling and intriguing. (I’ve never seen roots like those.) The purple is fine and gives it a base. I love it!!

Thanks, @Alfredo_Mora and @Diane_Miller!
