About This Image

Last month I led another fun and fruitful tour in southern Chile. Pumas, as always, were our primary goal, and we were quite fortunate to spend time with a new family on this trip. Though I’ve seen many small cubs over the years, the chances to sit and watch them interact and play at close range are pretty rare. In this case, Mom had made a kill, and while she spent most of her time eating or resting, her twin cubs kept busy by chasing and playing with each other.

Hi Max

Very nice photograph of these Puma Cubs playing. Catching the cub in the air with his sibling’s paw, ready to slap him, makes for great framing.

Max: As a cat lover I got a major -meter spike from this one. What a terrific capture and I really envy you the experience. Most excellent. >=))>

Great shot Max, really nice framing and timing. The paws, the eye, the tail, you have pretty well nailed it with that jumping cub.

Nice background too, we get a sense of where they are, and a nice complimentary colour.

Wow! What a great photo. An amazing image with the cubs playing and one caught in mid leap. Great framing, great story.

Wonderful capture! You really maximize the expressiveness of the scene by catching the cub in the air and having great lighting and sharpness on the face of the cub on the right, as well as catching his eye focused on his sibling. I would also add that having the a great natural looking and blurred background as natural and blurred foreground really makes the scene artistic. This is an awesome wildlife image that captured lots of emotion and cuteness!

I don’t remember having seen such a playful image of Puma cubs, great action and wonderful freeze.

I may prefer some more canvas around.

Wow!! Gorgeous - beautiful moment captured!

maybe darken the background grasses a tiny bit and reduce the highlights on the lower cubs shoulder so that the textures of the fur come through a little more and the cubs stand out it bit more from the BG??

Great capture. Love the interaction. What I do not like is the obvious blurring of the background beyond what was captured. Make it subtle as at the moment it is too fake and detracts from what is a great capture.

I agree with all above, this is a wonderful, playful capture. Excellent job!!

Well, you’d better blame my lens in that case. That is simply the result of the distance + depth of field.

And speaking as someone who purposely avoids “overediting” (including massive noise reduction, reducing Clarity, selective blurring, adding vignettes, and cloning elements) in my color work, this type of accusation rankles me a bit.

Below is a chunk of the original and unedited scene (as you can tell, it’s a sizeable crop) to show you how the depth of field looked in the wider view.

Sorry, my mistake then. I shall bear this in mind when viewing any other images from you.
