Description
We have a pair of CA quail that show up out back pretty regularly. I was capturing the male walking recently when he suddenly decided flap and jump. Here’s a capture that I snagged of him.

Beautiful bird, and a great pose! Sharpness and DOF, as well the coloring of the bird are spot-on. You might consider toning down the very bright highlights, especially the one to the right of the bird’s head. Other than those minor nits, I really like this one!

Very cool action, Dave. The bright areas behind the bird are rather distracting. I don’t know if they can be brought down or if they’re blown, but it wouldn’t be too difficult to clone some of the other background colors over them with a semi-transparent brush to mellow them out.
Great pose you caught, Dave. Great detail and color. Agree with trying to tone down the background.
I love this! Quail are one of my favorite birds and I wish I had more chances to photograph them. Apart from what others said about the background, I’d probably crop the photo so that the bird is the center of the frame (this would also help eliminate that bright spot in the background). Such a cool shot!
