I caught this shot yesterday and enjoyed the topknot’s shadow playing down over the breast.

A lot of potential here. Nice pose and reasonably good detail. You have nice compositional elements in this image. A little more room on the bottom would be helpful in this tight crop. The harsh light isn’t helping you; shadows on the head and neck, the area where you want your best exposure is overpowering. That said, sometimes you cannot plan where you get the opportunity for a quail image. I moved into my current home in 2004 and had a quail family across the street; haven’t seen one since.
Hi Dave, a beautiful subject and I like the pose. Cropping seems okay to me even though a little room as David suggests may help balance out the image. Perhaps a little more reduction of highlights. A pleasing image.
