Rainy day

I couldn’t help but post this after I was whining to @Mike_Friel just yesterday about the fact that we (here in the Texas hill country) have been having above normal temperatures and way below average rain fall these past several months. To my delight, yesterday evening, this morning and supposedly for the next few day we are getting a wonderful dose of gentle rain!

The image was taken looking through a window (with a screen) which was saturated with rain drops. It is a composite consisting of one ICM capture and the other is a standard shot I placed on a layer in PS (used a soft blending mode at 68%) on top of the ICM.

I am curious to know if it feel abstract enough? Is there a feeling of rain? Too much movement or perhaps not enough? Any other thoughts, suggestions and/or comments ware welcome.

Totally abstract enough for me, Linda. Terrific technique too. Well done.

Beautiful, @linda_mellor. I like how the screen and rain acted as filters, giving an embroidered texture. Enough ICM to make it abstract without obscuring the view. I’m curious how it looked without the standard shot.

Thanks, @David_Bostock and @Mike_Friel for your kind thoughts. And Mike here is how the original ICM looked without the “screened” shot overlay:

Wonderful abstract Linda with a really interesting technique. Yes I do get the feeling of rain in the image and there is enough movement in the ICM. Well done!

Thanks much, @Alfredo_Mora, mostly I was just happy for the rain!

Really great can lots and yes, though it is abstract, it still feels familiar and recognizable as a view through a rainy window.

FWIW, I like the straight ICM version at least as well as the composite, The darker green shape in the middle feels less dominant, giving the whole composition a bit more unity to my eye.

Really nice work and a great potential series as the view changes outside the window.

Thanks, @Marylynne_Diggs for your kind thoughts. Great idea about doing a series of the same scene.

Linda,

Great work and great choice and idea of combining multiple images. I think your original works really well in portraying that “rainy day” look and feel - Kinda like, “Mommy, I want to go outside and play… but it’s raining!”

I’m with Marylynne and her comment. the straight ICM works beautifully as well. Maybe it’s the more muted colors, less contrast that are providing a more “unified” look.

I’m not sure how this would work, or if you hadn’t already included this, but one thought would be to drop the opacity on the “screen window” image layer in your blend; of course to taste. And then depending on your blend mode can affect the contrast/color/saturation levels as well.

Regardless, the other thing I wanted to mention was how this comes across as an “Impressionistic” style print.

Lovely, thanks for sharing!

Lon

Thanks so much, @Lon_Overacker. Interesting that that “I want to go outside” was exactly my thoughts at the time. On my original submission, I did play with the screen window layer blending modes and ended up using soft lighting with 68% opacity. But as you say, experimenting with different blending will create a different affect depending on the intent. I can, and have, played with the various modes for more hours than perhaps I should have. Really fun stuff to get lost in. Thanks again.
